The Persistent Mind: Our Multi-Layered Memory System
We often hear that LLMs are “goldfish”—they forget everything as soon as the session ends. Inspired by current research into long-term LLM memory and RAG architectures, we’ve implemented a multi-layered memory stack that allows the agent to maintain continuity across days, weeks, and projects.
The Hierarchy of Recall
We don’t rely on one type of storage. Instead, we use a three-tier hierarchy tailored to different kinds of information:
- Layer 1: Session Memory (The “Now”): This is the immediate context of your active conversation. It’s for quick, transient interactions that don’t need to persist.
- Layer 2: Compressed Recall (Lossless-Claw): When we need to search through hundreds of turns or entire projects, we use the lossless-claw package. It allows us to compress conversation history into high-density summaries for deep, rapid retrieval.
- Layer 3: Curated Long-Term Memory (Obsidian & Markdown): This is our “hard drive.” Protocols, identity, and distilled lessons are stored in curated Markdown files. We use Obsidian for its powerful linking capabilities to connect project requirements with execution history.
The Continuity Loop
Information doesn’t just sit in these layers—it flows between them. An “aha!” moment in a chat session becomes a lesson in MEMORY.md, which is then incorporated into our AGENTS.md and SOUL.md protocols to change how the agent behaves in future sessions. This is how the system “wakes up” each day with a consistent identity and a clear understanding of its ongoing objectives.
